Why We Use Organic Sprouted Oats (and Why It Matters)

A closer look at why we use organic sprouted oats in our crumble topping, from texture and flavour to digestibility and nutrition. We break down what sprouting means, why organic matters, and how this simple ingredient choice helps create a crunch that’s both comforting and thoughtfully made.

FUN FACTS

Oats are simple. Familiar. The kind of ingredient most people don’t think twice about. But in our kitchen, they’re one of the most important parts of the story.

Because what goes into a crumble topping isn’t just about texture or taste. It’s about how it behaves in the oven, how it feels when you take that first bite, and how it sits in your body after the last spoonful is gone.

That’s where organic sprouted oats come in.

What “sprouted” actually means

Before oats become what you see in a bag or a box, they’re living seeds. Sprouting simply means they’ve been gently soaked and allowed to begin their natural germination process before being gently dried and packaged. That small shift changes what they are at a structural level, breaking down the parts of the grain that can be harder to digest and making nutrients more available. Sprouting also unlocks a deeper flavour. It sounds small, but it changes everything!

Why organic matters to us

Organic isn’t a buzzword in our kitchen; it’s a baseline. We choose organic sprouted oats because they’re grown without synthetic pesticides or shortcuts that don’t belong in food that’s meant to feel wholesome and honest.

When you’re building something as simple and nostalgic as crumble, every ingredient has to earn its place. Organic oats just make sense. Cleaner inputs, better flavour, and a result we feel good about serving to our community.

The “Sciency” Stuff

I’m not here to turn dessert into a lecture, but… this is where I (Jenn) totally geek out! It turns out oats have quite a reputation in the science world.

1. Heart health support (beta-glucan fibre)
Oats contain a soluble fibre called beta-glucan, which has been shown to help reduce LDL cholesterol levels. A meta-analysis of clinical trials found that oat beta-glucan can significantly lower LDL cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol. While other research has consistently linked oat consumption with improved cardiovascular markers.

Translation: your crumble isn’t a health product, but the base ingredient has a well-studied role in heart-friendly eating patterns.

2. Blood sugar steadiness (glycemic response)
Oats, particularly less processed forms, tend to produce a slower rise in blood glucose compared to more refined grains. The beta-glucan forms a gel-like structure in the gut that slows digestion and absorption of carbohydrates. In other words: energy that behaves a little more gently, rather than a sharp spike-and-crash situation.

3. Gut and digestion support
That same soluble fibre acts as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial gut bacteria, which play a role in digestion, metabolism, and overall gut health. I like to think of it as quiet internal teamwork. Nothing flashy. Just systems doing their job better when given the right fuel.

Now on to the “Cheffy” Stuff…Texture

Crumble topping lives and dies by texture. Too fine, and it disappears into dust. Too heavy, and it turns dense and dull. Just right, and it becomes that golden, buttery crunch that holds everything together.

Sprouted oats bring a naturally hearty structure without feeling rough or gritty. They bake into clusters that crisp beautifully on top while still staying tender underneath. It’s that contrast, crisp and soft at the same time, that makes each bite interesting.

The kind of interesting you don’t notice while eating… only when you realize the pan is suddenly empty!

Why it matters in every crumble we make

Every crumble we bake starts with fruit, but it’s the topping that finishes the story. Using organic sprouted oats isn’t about being trendy or complicated. It’s about making a deliberate choice at the very top layer of something that’s meant to feel comforting and familiar.

It’s about knowing that what looks simple on the outside is built on ingredients that were chosen with care on the inside. Because we don’t just want you to taste sweetness. We want you to taste intention!

Most people don’t think about oats when they think about dessert. We do! Because when something is as humble as crumble, every detail matters more than it seems. And sometimes, the difference between “good” and “I need another bite” is something as quiet as how an oat was grown long before it ever reached your kitchen.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention, that we buy our oats ONE Degree Organic Foods, a company that sources oats from Alberta farmers. Who knows, maybe the batch you're eating right now were grown by someone you know! Just one more reason to order your crumbles today!
